Horror Stories to Avoid at all Costs

Posted by Brian Doherty on Oct 30, 2014 11:30:00 AM

Let's do some digging to see what nasty horror stories we can find lurking in offices out there...

We have all had our share of office based horrors from pressing DELETE instead of SAVE, from Laptop/PC  Blue Screen of Death with Zero Back-up to spilling coffee accidentally onto your Tablet. We are all guilty of these very common crimes.

We did a little digging and came up with the most common horror stories that we have come across (more often that you would think).

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502Data Corruption

Yes, it can happen. It's impact can be so much scarier if you

a) only do sporadic data checks in Sage 50

b) Ignore the errors which have been there so long they have grown cobwebs

c) weren't as diligent as you should have been about your back-ups

Your data needs to be cared for. It is the lifeblood of your business and you don't want to expose yourself to any risky situations.

(Note: if you have the latest version of Sage 50, backups happen as you go, so one less thing to worry about!).

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502End of Life for XP

It may seem harmless enough to continue using Micosoft XP, but exposing yourself to viruses and other potential nasty security threats is something you may encounter, when you least expect it. XP is dead and to revive it beyond it's life time is a little on the scary side, so tread carefully...

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502Not legislative compliant

Ouch. Normally, this is not a big problem. If some new legislation comes in (for example changes to VAT rules or SEPA payments), then you may just need to upgrade to the latest version to become compliant. The problem arises if you let your software version go "end of life". This is a whole different story. In this case, you either figure out another plan to become legislatively compliant (i.e. manual workarounds or some other plan) or purchase the software again (which can be a real pain in the neck).

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502Working away in the wrong company

This has to be the worst! Logged into the wrong company (or the training company), feeling so proud of your speed-typing skills and your ability to get work done. At 4.30pm you spot something a bit strange and realise that you have been slaving away all day in the WRONG COMPANY. No permanent damage, just a sick feeling in your stomach. You arrive to work the next feeling a little weird!

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502SQL back-up (Sage 200)

I can't count the number of times I have heard "I didn't realise we needed to back up the database, I thought we just needed to back up the files". This is a very scary scenario that you never want encounter.

monster_hand_point_800_clr_15502Still hand-writing cheques

Drawing a pararell between Halloween and writing cheques may be a little bit of a stretch, but it is still freakishly freaky how many businesses out there still use cheques. The Government e-day has been and gone but I am not sure how many cheques are still floating around out there??  Okay the odd cheque here and there doesn't seem like such a bad thing, but think of all the costs involved in continuing to send cheques en masse. Cheques are slow and old and continuing to use them does not make for an efficient payment service. The cheque is dead. Great, I say.
