Achieving high growth levels with your internal IT systems
As your business grows, it is important to take stock of your internal IT systems as what may have suited you 10 years, 5 years or even 6 months ago may no longer suit your business today.
Just a few pieces of advice when looking to make the move:
1. Get the timing right. Don't leave it so long that your business can't grow at pace due to restrictions caused by internal IT systems.
2. Make sure whatever system you go with is flexible enough to allow you to add on to it, so you are not backing yourself into a cul-de-sac. Choose wisely and make sure that your business can grow in conjuction with your systems.
3. Think about your whole business and how automation could be used to deliver efficiencies in every department. The more you can take advantage of technology, then the more it is likely that you can achieve economies of scale.
Here's an example of a successful Irish business, Frylite, that made key decisions at the right times. Moving from Sage 50 to Sage 200, then implementing a custom developed application to manage deliveries, routes and runs (integrated with Sage 200), integrating their hand-held solution and later implementing a Customer Relationship Management solution to help drive new business. Frylite is a shining example of a successful Irish business that has grown and evolved its business using Sage 200 software at the core.
Frylite's internal Sage software systems were implemented and integrated step-by-step as the business grew. New revenue streams such as the collection of waste oil for recycling didn't involve re-inventing the wheel from a systems perspective, it simply meant adapting the existing systems to cater for this new aspect of the business.
